Traditional French Toast Casserole: The Ultimate Comfort Breakfast Guide

This Traditional French Toast Casserole is a classic, comforting breakfast made with buttery bread, warm cinnamon, and a rich custard base. Baked until golden with a soft, custardy center and lightly crisp edges, it’s an easy dish that’s perfect for weekends, holidays, or feeding a hungry crowd.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf brioche, challah, or French bread, cut into 1-inch cubes

  • 6 large eggs

  • 2 cups whole milk

  • ½ cup granulated sugar

  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • ¼ teaspoon salt

  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted

Instructions

  • Preheat the Oven
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or nonstick spray.

  • Prepare the Bread
Spread the bread cubes evenly in the prepared baking dish.

  • Make the Custard
In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt until smooth.

  • Assemble
Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread, gently pressing the bread down so it absorbs the custard. Drizzle the melted butter evenly over the top.

  • Soak
Let the casserole sit for 10 minutes to allow the bread to soak up the liquid.

  • Bake
Bake uncovered for 40 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the center is set.

  • Serve
Let cool slightly before serving. Serve warm with maple syrup, powdered sugar, or fresh berries.

Notes

  • Best bread: Slightly stale bread absorbs the custard best.

  • Richer flavor: Substitute part of the milk with half-and-half or cream.

  • Extra spice: Add a pinch of nutmeg for warmth.

  • Make-ahead: Assemble the night before, cover, and refrigerate. Bake in the morning.
