Savory Ham and Cheese Butter Biscuits: Fluffy Homemade Treat

These Savory Ham and Cheese Butter Biscuits are fluffy, buttery, and packed with delicious flavor. With tender layers, melted cheddar, and smoky ham inside, they make a perfect grab-and-go breakfast, brunch side, or comforting snack. The folding (lamination) step gives them those beautiful flaky layers—just like bakery-style biscuits!

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 tablespoon baking powder

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)

  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder (optional)

  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed

  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

  • 1/2 cup cooked diced ham

  • 3/4 cup cold buttermilk (or regular milk)

  • 1 egg (for egg wash)

  • Fresh parsley or chives (optional garnish)

Instructions

1. Preheat

Heat your oven to 200°C (400°F). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

2. Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large bowl, whisk together:
flour, baking powder, salt, garlic powder, and onion powder.

3. Add Butter

Add the cold butter cubes.
Use your fingers or a pastry cutter to rub the butter into the flour until it forms coarse crumbs with small visible butter pieces.

4. Add Buttermilk

Pour in the cold buttermilk and mix gently until the dough just comes together.
Avoid overmixing — this keeps the biscuits light.

5. Laminate (Fold for Flaky Layers)

Lightly flour your surface and turn out the dough.

  • Flatten into a rectangle.

  • Fold it into thirds like a letter.

  • Rotate 90°, flatten again, and fold into thirds.

  • Repeat 2–3 times.

6. Assemble Biscuits

Roll the dough to about 1.5 cm (½ inch) thick.
Use a biscuit cutter or glass (6–7 cm wide) to cut out rounds.

  • Place half the rounds on the baking sheet.

  • Add a spoonful of cheddar and diced ham on each.

  • Place another dough round on top and gently press the edges to seal.

7. Bake

Beat the egg and brush tops with egg wash.
Bake for 15–18 minutes, or until puffed and golden brown.

8. Serve

Let cool slightly. Sprinkle with fresh parsley or chives if you like.
Serve warm.

Notes

  • Keep ingredients cold: This helps create flaky layers.

  • Don’t twist the cutter: Press straight down for better rising.

  • Cheese options: Try Swiss, pepper jack, or mozzarella.

  • Add-ins: Chopped jalapeños, cooked bacon, or green onions make great flavor twists.

  • Freeze for later: Freeze shaped biscuits (unbaked). Bake straight from the freezer—add 2–3 minutes.
