Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 for best flavor)

  • 2 tbsp soy sauce (or tamari for gluten-free)

  • 1 tbsp sesame oil

  • 3 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 tsp fresh ginger, minced

  • 2 green onions, chopped (plus extra for garnish)

  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

  • 2 cups cooked rice (jasmine, basmati, or brown rice)

Optional Toppings & Add-Ins

  • Sesame seeds

  • Sliced cucumber

  • Kimchi or pickled vegetables

  • Bell peppers, carrots, broccoli, or spinach

  • Fried egg (for extra richness)

Instructions

1. Prepare the Rice

  • Stovetop: Rinse 1 cup of rice until the water runs clear. Combine with 2 cups water, bring to a boil, then reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 15 minutes. Let rest for 5 minutes, then fluff with a fork.

  • Rice Cooker: Add rinsed rice and water to the cooker and cook according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

  • Instant Pot: Combine rinsed rice and water, cook on high pressure for 3 minutes, then allow a natural release.

2. Cook the Ground Beef

  • Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it apart, until browned and no longer pink (about 5–7 minutes).

  • Drain excess fat if needed.

  • Add garlic and ginger; cook for 1–2 minutes until fragrant.

  • Stir in soy sauce, sesame oil, and chopped green onions. Season with salt and pepper. Let simmer for 2 minutes to allow flavors to meld.

3. Assemble the Bowl

  • Spoon cooked rice into serving bowls.

  • Top with the seasoned ground beef.

  • Add vegetables or toppings of choice.

  • Garnish with sesame seeds and extra green onions. Serve warm.

Notes

  • Boost flavor: Add 1–2 teaspoons of brown sugar or honey for a subtle sweetness.

  • Extra heat: Drizzle with chili oil or add a spoon of gochujang for spice.

  • Meal prep friendly: Store beef and rice separately in airtight containers for up to 4 days.

  • Leaner option: Use lean ground beef and add a splash of broth to keep it juicy.
