Hawaiian Roll French Toast is everything you love about classic French toast—sweet, fluffy, buttery, and comforting—made even better with soft, slightly sweet Hawaiian rolls. Each roll becomes a little golden pillow of cinnamon-vanilla goodness, crisp on the outside and tender inside. This recipe comes together quickly, making it perfect for busy mornings, weekend brunch, or even a fun breakfast-for-dinner treat.
1 (12-pack) Hawaiian rolls
3 large eggs
¾ cup half-and-half or whole milk
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 tablespoons brown sugar
Pinch of salt
4 tablespoons butter (for cooking)
For Serving (Optional)
Powdered sugar
Fresh fruit (berries, bananas, etc.)
Maple syrup
Make the Custard
In a large bowl, whisk together eggs and half-and-half until smooth.
Add Flavorings
Whisk in vanilla extract, cinnamon, brown sugar, and salt until fully incorporated.
Prepare the Rolls
Use a toothpick or skewer to poke several small holes in the bottom of each roll. This helps the custard soak inside.
Soak the Rolls
Working in batches, dip each roll into the custard and let soak for about 30 seconds, turning to coat all sides. Do not over-soak.
Cook
Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a nonstick skillet or griddle over medium-low heat.
Cook rolls for 30–60 seconds per side until golden brown and lightly crisp. Add remaining butter as needed.
Serve
Serve warm with powdered sugar, fresh fruit, and maple syrup.
Use medium-low heat to prevent burning before the inside warms.
Slightly stale rolls absorb custard better.
Add a pinch of nutmeg for extra warmth.
For a dairy-free version, use almond or oat milk and dairy-free butter.
