Amish Hamburger Steak Bake: A Hearty Old-Fashioned Comfort Food Classic

This Amish Hamburger Steak Bake is classic comfort food at its best. Juicy hamburger steaks are baked in a rich, creamy gravy until tender and full of flavor. It’s an old-fashioned, hearty dinner that feels like something straight from a cozy country kitchen—and it pairs perfectly with mashed potatoes or buttered noodles.

Ingredients

Scale

Hamburger Steaks

  • 2 lbs ground beef (80/20 for best flavor)

  • ½ cup breadcrumbs (plain or seasoned)

  • 1 egg, beaten

  • 1 onion, finely diced

  • 2 teaspoons salt

  • 1 teaspoon black pepper

Creamy Gravy

  • 3 tablespoons butter (salted or unsalted)

  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour

  • 2 cups beef broth (low sodium preferred)

  • 1 cup heavy cream

  • 1 onion, sliced

  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

Instructions

  • Mix the patties: In a large bowl, gently combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, diced onion, salt, and pepper. Do not overmix.

  • Shape: Form the mixture into 6–8 oval-shaped hamburger steaks. Set aside.

  • Brown: In an oven-safe skillet over medium heat, brown the patties for 3–4 minutes per side until golden. Remove and set aside.

  • Make the gravy: In the same skillet, melt butter and sauté sliced onions until soft. Stir in flour and cook for 2 minutes. Slowly whisk in beef broth and heavy cream until smooth. Add garlic powder.

  • Bake: Return patties to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy. Cover tightly and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 45 minutes. Uncover and bake an additional 15 minutes.

  • Rest & serve: Let rest for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Use 80/20 ground beef for juicy, flavorful steaks.

  • Don’t overmix the meat—it keeps the patties tender.

  • If gravy thickens too much, stir in a splash of warm broth or milk.

  • Great served with mashed potatoes, green beans, or egg noodles.
