This Amish Hamburger Steak Bake is classic comfort food at its best. Juicy hamburger steaks are baked in a rich, creamy gravy until tender and full of flavor. It’s an old-fashioned, hearty dinner that feels like something straight from a cozy country kitchen—and it pairs perfectly with mashed potatoes or buttered noodles.
2 lbs ground beef (80/20 for best flavor)
½ cup breadcrumbs (plain or seasoned)
1 egg, beaten
1 onion, finely diced
2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon black pepper
3 tablespoons butter (salted or unsalted)
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 cups beef broth (low sodium preferred)
1 cup heavy cream
1 onion, sliced
1 teaspoon garlic powder
Mix the patties: In a large bowl, gently combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, diced onion, salt, and pepper. Do not overmix.
Shape: Form the mixture into 6–8 oval-shaped hamburger steaks. Set aside.
Brown: In an oven-safe skillet over medium heat, brown the patties for 3–4 minutes per side until golden. Remove and set aside.
Make the gravy: In the same skillet, melt butter and sauté sliced onions until soft. Stir in flour and cook for 2 minutes. Slowly whisk in beef broth and heavy cream until smooth. Add garlic powder.
Bake: Return patties to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy. Cover tightly and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 45 minutes. Uncover and bake an additional 15 minutes.
Rest & serve: Let rest for 10 minutes before serving.
Use 80/20 ground beef for juicy, flavorful steaks.
Don’t overmix the meat—it keeps the patties tender.
If gravy thickens too much, stir in a splash of warm broth or milk.
Great served with mashed potatoes, green beans, or egg noodles.
